><p>Wer immer nur auf ausgetretenen Pfaden wandelt, wird nie neue Ziele erreichen. Nur wenige Unternehmen setzen dies so konsequent um, wie der mittelst\u00e4ndische Zahnradspezialist Wolfgang Schmahl GmbH &amp; Co. KG. So hat das Velberter Unternehmen als erster deutscher Lohnbetrieb in eine innovative Vakuum-H\u00e4rteanlage investiert, mit der sich eine ganze Reihe von Vorteilen realisieren lassen.<\/p>\n<p>Mittelst\u00e4ndische Unternehmen sind das R\u00fcckgrat der deutschen Wirtschaft. In diesem Bereich sind hierzulande rund 60 Prozent aller sozialversicherungspflichtigen Besch\u00e4ftigten angestellt und werden \u00fcber 80 Prozent aller Fachkr\u00e4fte ausgebildet. Beeindruckende Zahlen. Gleichzeitig gelten mittelst\u00e4ndische Unternehmen als sehr kundenorientiert, flexibel bei der Umsetzung ihrer Ziele sowie innovationsfreudig. Dass dies alles der Realit\u00e4t entspricht, l\u00e4sst sich auch und vor allem am Beispiel der schon angesprochenen Wolfgang Schmahl GmbH &amp; Co. KG belegen.<\/p>\n<p>Gegr\u00fcndet wurde das Unternehmen vor genau 50 Jahren. Als 1969 sein damaliger Arbeitgeber den Gesch\u00e4ftsbereich Lohnfertigung von Zahnr\u00e4dern aufgab, nutzte Wolfgang Schmahl die ,L\u00fccke\u2018, sich als Lohnfertiger von Zahnr\u00e4dern selbstst\u00e4ndig zu machen. Seitdem hat sich die Zahnradfabrik Neviges vom Ein-Mann-Betrieb zum hochspezialisierten und international t\u00e4tigen Hersteller von Zahnr\u00e4dern und Systemlieferanten kompletter Getrieben entwickelt. Heute werden auf einer Produktionsfl\u00e4che von \u00fcber 10.000 qm mehr als 140 Mitarbeiter besch\u00e4ftigt.<\/p>\n<p>Seit 1998 lenkt die Geschicke der Sohn des Firmengr\u00fcnders und heutige Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrer Martin Schmahl. Er umrei\u00dft den Unternehmensschwerpunkt so: \u201eWir sind l\u00e4ngst kein reiner Teilelieferant mehr, sondern haben uns in den letzten Jahren mit der Konstruktion und Fertigung kompletter Getriebe zu einem Systemlieferanten\u00a0 weiterentwickelt. Dieser Gesch\u00e4ftsbereich nimmt inzwischen rund 50 Prozent unseres Gesch\u00e4ftsvolumens ein. Wobei wir uns ausschlie\u00dflich auf Spezialgetriebe und Achsen f\u00fcr Land- und Baumaschinen, Windkraftr\u00e4der, den Schiffsbau und die Flurf\u00f6rdertechnik konzentrieren.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Und weiter: \u201eWir sind in unserer Konstellation ziemlich einzigartig, weil wir einen gro\u00dfen Durchmesserbereich, beispielsweise Zahnr\u00e4der bis Modul 30 bei Werkst\u00fcckgewichten bis 5 t abdecken und gleichzeitig eine hohe Varianz in den St\u00fcckzahlen anbieten k\u00f6nnen (von Losgr\u00f6\u00dfe 1 bis zu gr\u00f6\u00dferen Serien \u00fcber 100.000 St\u00fcck pro Jahr). Das stellt h\u00f6chste Anforderungen an unsere Fertigung und macht es unumg\u00e4nglich, dass wir uns bei Investitionen f\u00fcr alle neuen Technologien rund um die Zahnradfertigung \u00f6ffnen.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Und weiter: \u201eWir haben in den vergangenen Jahren sehr viel in die mechanische Bearbeitung investiert. Inzwischen sind wir in diesem Bereich sehr gut aufgestellt. Was uns aber immer gefehlt hat, war die M\u00f6glichkeit, auch die W\u00e4rmebehandlung im eigenen Haus durchzuf\u00fchren. Wir haben uns des \u00d6fteren \u00fcberlegt, ob es denn nicht Sinn machen w\u00fcrde, in moderne H\u00e4rtetechnologie zu investieren, aber haben auf dem Markt kein wirklich \u00fcberzeugendes System gefunden, das unseren Anforderungen entspricht.\u201c<br \/>\nKlassische H\u00e4rteanlagen kamen schon aus grunds\u00e4tzlichen Erw\u00e4gungen (Nachfolgeprozesse, fehlende Fachkr\u00e4fte, Energieeffizienz) nicht in Betracht. Aber auch den als moderne Alternative geltenden Vakuum-H\u00e4rteanlagen konnte Martin Schmahl nicht sonderlich viel abgewinnen: \u201eBei konventionellen Vakuum-H\u00e4rteanlagen wird f\u00fcr den Abschreckungsvorgang unter Hochdruck Stickstoff- oder Heliumgas verwendet. Das erfordert sehr hochwertige Werkstoffe, da bei den ,einfachen\u2018, sprich niedrig legierten Einsatzwerkstoffen wie z.B. 16MnCr5, nicht die n\u00f6tige Kernh\u00e4rte erreicht werden konnte.\u201c Zwar hatte man fr\u00fcher bei verzugskritischen Bauteilen schon \u00f6fter auf das Vakuumh\u00e4rten zur\u00fcckgegriffen und kannte das Verfahren als Alternative zu den g\u00e4ngigen Standard-Aufkohlungsprozessen. Aber: \u201eUnsere Erkenntnis war, dass das Vakuumh\u00e4rten in Verbindung mit der Gasabschreckung unter Verwendung teurer Einsatzwerkstoffe keinen wirtschaftlichen Sinn macht.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Warum aber nicht weiter das H\u00e4rten au\u00dfer Haus geben? Martin Schmahl: \u201eAls mittelst\u00e4ndisches Unternehmen haben wir nat\u00fcrlich nicht die hohen St\u00fcckzahlen wie Gro\u00dfunternehmen. Das macht uns f\u00fcr Lohnh\u00e4rtereien nicht unbedingt attraktiv. Das hei\u00dft, dass wir mit unseren Terminw\u00fcnschen nicht immer auf offene Ohren gesto\u00dfen sind und unsere Durchlauf- und Lieferzeiten dadurch unn\u00f6tig lange waren.\u201c Also haben Martin Schmahl und sein Team weiter nach L\u00f6sungen gesucht, die das eine \u2013 die Nachteile der angesprochenen H\u00e4rtetechnologien \u2013 vermeiden und das andere \u2013 Nutzung ,normaler\u2018, sprich kosteng\u00fcnstiger Einsatzwerkstoffe \u2013 erlauben. Eine L\u00f6sung zeichnete sich ab, als man bei der Suche auf die Lohnh\u00e4rterei VTN stie\u00df. Das Unternehmen ist seit 2015 eine 100-prozentige Tochter des japanischen Multikonzerns IHI, der wiederum weltweit unter anderem Anlagen und Dienstleistungen f\u00fcr W\u00e4rmebehandlungen und Oberfl\u00e4chenbeschichtungen anbietet. Darunter ein innovatives und in Deutschland unbekanntes System zur Vakuumaufkohltechnik mit \u00d6labschreckung.<\/p>\n<p>F\u00fcr Martin Schmahl schon beinahe ein echter Gl\u00fccksfall, entsprach doch diese Technologie dem Schmahl\u2018schen Forderungskatalog bis ins Detail. Martin Schmahl: \u201eWir haben uns sehr schnell entschlossen, in diese\u00a0 hochmoderne Vakuum-H\u00e4rtetechnologie zu investieren, weil wir hier alle Vorteile des konventionellen H\u00e4rtens beibehalten, ohne mit deren Nachteilen leben zu m\u00fcssen und gleichzeitig k\u00f6nnen wir die Schw\u00e4chen \u00fcblicher Vakuumanlagen vermeiden.\u201c Im Detail: \u201eZum Beispiel entfallen hier Nachbehandlungsprozesse wie das \u00a0Reinigungsstrahlen. Da die Teile mit dem Einbringen in die elektrisch betriebene W\u00e4rmekammer bis zum temperierten \u00d6lbad in einem geschlossenen sauerstofffreien System verbleiben, gibt es keine Verzunderung, denn direkt unter dem Ofen befindet sich der 9.000 Liter fassende temperierte \u00d6ltank.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Und weiter: \u201eGegen\u00fcber anderer Vakuumh\u00e4rtesysteme k\u00f6nnen wir hier auf unsere \u00a0Standard-Einsatzwerkstoffe zur\u00fcckgreifen. Vor allem aber haben wir den gesamten Prozess im eigenen Haus und k\u00f6nnen den ganzen Durchlauf viel besser steuern, sodass wir nicht mehr auf externe Dienstleister angewiesen sind. Noch einmal der Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrer: \u201eBislang haben wir im Durchschnitt um die 120 Tonnen pro Monat f\u00fcr W\u00e4rmebehandlung au\u00dfer Haus vergeben. Das deckt jetzt unsere neue Anlage ab.
